[Disclosure: the author is a personal friend and fellow actor in community theater. However, he has known me to be honestly critical of his stage work at times, and I see no reason to pull my punches here. We'll still get together over drinks.]"musings", as the author's preface states, is the collected works of some sixteen years. Maggio's own promotional notices categorize his poems as "free-association blank verse", but that is an incomplete label. This style of poetry can be an acquired taste; it demands much of the reader. Some of the poems lie flat on the page, and the free-verse textural graphics seem either arbitrary or contrived -- but only some (earlier works, I trust).
There are gems here, and colors of value outweigh the gravel. Maggio's verses reward repeated thoughtful readings, or reading out loud, depending. There are examples of more traditional formalism, rhyme and meter, and these work well. But certain of the free-verse utterances are powerful, jarring, and on occaision profoundly moving in their essential truth.
As a whole, the book is uneven, but the poems are presented alphabetically by title or first line, so there is no way to appreciate the author's development across time. However, a close reading of certain poems, by their content, give some clues to their placement in his personal timeline. The result is a glimpse into the heart and soul of a friend that I still do not know that well.
I'm on my third reading, and still finding surprises.
